What Does 1/3 HP Mean on a Cold Plunge Chiller?

Horsepower is only one part of a chiller specification. Here’s what to look at before treating it as a performance guarantee.

“1/3 HP” is useful shorthand, but it is not enough by itself to tell you how quickly a cold-plunge system will cool your water.

Horsepower is not a complete cooling claim

Different systems can use similar horsepower labels while producing different real-world results. Compressor design, refrigerant, heat-exchanger design, flow rate, ambient temperature, water volume, insulation, and control strategy all matter.

The numbers that matter with it

  • Rated electrical input
  • Rated cooling capacity
  • Recommended water volume
  • Required water-flow range
  • Ambient operating range
  • Tested starting and ending water temperatures
  • Elapsed cooling time under documented conditions

Why test conditions matter

A cooling-time claim without water volume and ambient temperature is hard to evaluate. Cooling a small insulated tub indoors is a different task from cooling a large uninsulated tank in hot weather.

For SHIVURR Core, we’re keeping performance claims locked until the exact production unit is verified under documented conditions.
